Current Projects

My work at UH Manoa

I work with scientists in the Oceanography department at the University of Hawaii at Manoa on projects spanning from physical oceanography to coral research. My specialty is instrumentation R&D, deployment, and training. This mainly involves low-power embedded electronics and software development.

On a given project, I focus on the engineering while my colleagues focus on the sciences (and the fundraising!). I get the scientific objectives from the researchers, work out the engineering requirements, provide and evaluate options for potential solutions, then translate those into physical devices that we can build and deploy base on the resources available. This "separation of concerns" gives me great freedom in technical directions. It's a unique situation, and I think the setup works well overall.
